Intro to Chip Carving

In this class, students will learn basic techniques of chip carving, which is the process of removing material from the surface of wood using angled cuts to reveal a decorative pattern or image. We will cover various types of cuts and shapes, along with learning about blade maintenance and safety. Each student will take home their carved board, and will be certified to come back and use the tools in our space. No experience or artistic talent is necessary!

Intro to Linoleum Block Printing

In this class, students will learn how to carve and print by hand using linoleum blocks and Speedball carving tools, following the traditional form of printmaking. We will explore some of the possibilities of printmaking, such as single prints, multi-color prints, and shading techniques. Tools, equipment, and designs will be provided. No experience or artistic talent is necessary.

Learn to use the Embroidery Machine!

In this 3 hour extended specialty class students will learn how to safely set up and use an embroidery machine. This class is for adults and children age 16 and up.  Children age 16 or 17 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Intro to Computer Aided Design and Fusion 360

This two session workshop is an introduction to parametric modeling for anyone looking to develop and build projects using computer aided design (CAD). No previous experience with CAD or Fusion 360 is required.


In this workshop, you will learn about the best practices of design intent, dimensions and constraints, and top-down versus bottom-up design. You will work through hands-on projects in Autodesk Fusion 360 to learn how to navigate the user interface, sketch 2D geometry, build 3D features, and turn components into functioning assemblies.


By the end of the second workshop, you will be able to create your own 3D designs which can be 3D printed, laser cut, or CNC milled at the makerspace! You can bring your own laptop with Fusion 360 installed (it’s free for hobbyists and small businesses!) or use acomputer at the makerspace.

This class is open to adults and children age 13 and up.

Build Your Own Arcade With Raspberry Pi!

Material fee-$100 (includes laser cutting and take-home Rasberry Pi plus all of the arcade components)

This two-session workshop is an introduction to the Raspberry Pi and digital fabrication with laser cutters. No previous experience with Raspberry Pis, coding, or digital fabrication is required. You will build a tabletop arcade system using a Raspberry Pi, arcade components, wood and acrylic.

 

In the first week of class, you will learn the basics of Raspberry Pi and set up your arcade software. Next you will fabricate and finish your controller box using laser cut pieces. In the second week you will install the arcade hardware and connect it to the Pi. At the end of the second session, you will have a fully functional arcade system which can connect to any TV, and you will be able to play some games! You will take home the controller box, which includes the Rasberry Pi. Each device can be daisy chained to another or via a USB controller for multiplayer gaming.

 

This class is open to adults and children age 13 and up.

You’ll get hands-on experience with the full screen printing process, including preparing artwork using hand drawn and collage methods, coating and exposing screens, reclaiming your screen for reuse, and printing your designs onto t-shirts. This class is open to everyone age 16 an up.

Basic Use and Safety (BUS) Classes are required for certification on all Class B equipment unless you can demonstrate proof of proficiency.

All BUS classes are 2 hrs long and cover safety, set-up, and basic use.

Cost for any BUS class: Members: $60 Non-Members: $75
